After a cancelled project that was to succeed the original Game Boy in the mid 90's, a revolutionary 32-bit handheld codenamed Project Atlantis, Nintendo eventually released the less revolutionary Game Boy Color in 1998. Game Boy Color is very similar to the slim Game Boy Pocket in most ways, apart from the color screen and the fact that it's processor runs twice as fast.
Despite it's color screen, the Game Boy Color had an impressive battery life lasting an average over 10 hours on 2 AA batteries. Many of the games released for GBC had a built-in feature allowing them to be displayed in 4 shades of gray, and thus being playable on the original GB. Other than these special black cartridged games no GBC games will fit into the old GB handhelds, however the GBC is backwards compatible and will play GB games. The GBC is also capable of turning the GB's simple 4 gray tones into 4 different colors, both for sprites and background making for a total of 8.
